BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Red Sox have optioned struggling third baseman Will Middlebrooks to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Middlebrooks has hit .192 in 53 games for Boston this season, missing 16 with a lower back strain.

Boston manager John Farrell said the emergence of Jose Iglesias at third has made it difficult to get Middlebrooks regular at-bats. Iglesias was batting .426 entering Tuesday night’s home game against Colorado.

Boston called up infielder Brandon Snyder and added him to the active roster. Backup catcher David Ross (concussion) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.

The Red Sox also recalled right-hander Pedro Beato from Pawtucket before Tuesday’s game after placing left-hander Franklin Morales on the DL with a strained muscle on the left side of his chest.
