A suspect in a hit-and-run accident in Kelso was shot to death Saturday after allegedly opening fire on officers and deputies, the Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The incident began about 10 a.m. when Kelso Police officers investigating a hit-and-run crash determined that the suspect, who had fled the scene and ran to a residence a few blocks away, had a felony warrant, a press release said.

Officers from the Kelso Police Department, Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office and the Longview Police Department contacted the suspect at the residence.

The subject, whose identity or gender was not released, initially refused to come out of a back bedroom but did come out at about 10:44 a.m. with a gun and began to fire at officers and deputies, the press release said.

A Kelso Police officer and a Cowlitz County Sheriff’s deputy returned fire, fatally striking the suspect.

A Kelso Police officer was struck by a round fired by the suspect and was transported to the hospital. The officer was treated and released.

This incident is being investigated by the Clark County Regional Major Crimes Task Force.
