Sen. Diane Feinstein, D-Calif., seeks to reinstate the failed assault weapons ban by banning many types of weapons to keep them out of the hands of criminals. I suggest all gun owners support Feinstein’s efforts with the following changes:
Instead of a ban, it should change to “restricted” and only someone licensed would be allowed to own and purchase these guns. This required license shall be a “shall issue” type so after submitting the proper paper work, the chief law enforcement officer would approve or show cause as to why this person shouldn’t be allowed to proceed with their transaction (similar to background check process).
This law should require the repeal of the National Firearms Act of 1968, and all firearms currently banned under that act would be reinstated for manufacture/import into the U.S. for purchase including automatic weapons for those having the appropriate paperwork and taxes paid.
It certainly wouldn’t solve the issue of criminals getting their hands on weapons; however, neither does an assault weapons ban, as criminals by definition do not obey the law. This change would allow law-abiding citizens to enjoy their Second Amendment rights and ensure it is regulating the militia as it was designed to do.
