AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Akron starting point guard Alex Abreu has pleaded not guilty to trafficking and possession of marijuana.

Abreu appeared in Municipal Court on Friday, one day after he was arrested by police for allegedly accepting a package containing 5 pounds of marijuana. He entered a not guilty plea and his bond was set at $5,000. Abreu is due back in court March 22.

The junior has been suspended indefinitely from the Zips, who play their regular-season finale at home against Kent State on Friday.

Abreu, who is from Puerto Rico, has been the team’s floor leader during a memorable season. The Zips recently won 19 straight games and will be the No. 1 seed in next week’s Mid-American Conference tournament. The MAC tourney winner receives the league’s automatic NCAA bid.
