NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Adrien Coleman scored 28 points and Kevin Dukes added 22 as Bethune-Cookman defeated Coppin State 89-78 Tuesday in a first-round game at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament.
Coleman, the conference’s leading scorer, and Dukes scored nine points each during a 25-5 run that gave the eighth-seeded Wildcats (13-19) a 57-38 lead with 11:09 remaining.
Bethune-Cookman, which will play top-seeded Norfolk State in the quarterfinals Wednesday night, shot 52.4 percent (33 of 63) to end a three-game losing streak.
Javoris Bryant added 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Wildcats, who outrebounded Coppin State 40-27 and outscored the Eagles 50-20 in the paint.
Taariq Cephas scored 27 points to lead the ninth-seeded Eagles (8-24), who defeated Bethune-Cookman 69-61 last Thursday in the teams’ regular-season finale. Andre Armstrong added 17 points and Michael Murray 14.
