SOCHI, Russia (AP) — Olga Fatkulina won the women’s 1,000-meter title Saturday to capture Russia’s second gold in three days at the speedskating world championships.
Fatkulina clocked 1 minute, 15.44 seconds at Adler Arena, the venue for the Sochi Olympics, to claim her first major victory. Two-time Olympic champion Ireen Wust of the Netherlands was 0.27 seconds behind. American Brittany Bowe edged out Olympic 1,000 champion Christine Nesbitt by 0.15 seconds for third place.
On Thursday, Denis Yuskov won the men’s 1,500 to claim Russia’s first gold at the worlds in 17 years.
The men’s 10,000 and women’s 5,000 are later Saturday.
