VALLS, Spain (AP) — Daniel Martin of Ireland closed in on the Volta a Catalunya title by extending his lead during Saturday’s sixth stage, which was won by Australia’s Simon Gerrans.

Martin increased his advantage over local favorite Joaquin Rodriguez to 17 seconds.

Nairo Quintana is 28 seconds back in third, while Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins remained fourth, 37 seconds off the pace.

Gerrans, riding for Orica Greenedge, won the final sprint to claim the 111-mile ride from Almacelles to Valls.

Riders face a 76-mile leg from El Vendrell to Barcelona along the Mediterranean coast on Sunday’s final stage.
