BRUSSELS (AP) — Peter Sagan of Slovakia made a solo breakaway with 2.5 miles left to win the Ghent-Wevelgem classic Sunday, extending his lead in the WorldTour standings.
Sagan’s surprise move left 10 other riders standing, giving him a 28-second advantage at the finish. He won in 4 hours, 29 minutes, 10 seconds.
After finishing second in his past two WorldTour races, the leader of the Cannondale Pro Cycling team has his first big victory of the season.
Slovenia’s Borut Bozic won the sprint in the chasing group for second place ahead of Belgium’s Greg Van Avermaet.
The course was shortened from 147 to 113 miles on the eve of the race because of snow and frost on parts of the roads. It was the second time in two weeks snow affected a race, with the Milan-San Remo also shortened.
