Oregon State Police say a man fatally shot and killed himself Sunday afternoon following a traffic stop on Highway 126 west of Eugene.

State police say a sergeant stopped a passenger car around 1:22 p.m. for speeding on Highway 126, about five miles west of Veneta. Police say that as the sergeant got out of his patrol car, the vehicle sped forward, hit a ditch and crashed into a tree. The man was alone in the car.

Police say the man had apparently shot himself. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The officer and the victim were not immediately identified.
