Maritime Museum in Bellingham gets new lease

BELLLINGHAM — A maritime museum in Bellingham is no longer in danger of sinking.

The Bellingham Herald reports that the Bellingham Maritime Museum had been paying the city’s port for 3,000 square feet of space in a warehouse, but over the past several years spread out to cover 25,000 square feet.

The port said the museum couldn’t keep using all that space, and in March the museum director, Mike Granat, said he might have to close it down.

Instead, the museum reached a new deal with the port: It will pay for 6,000 square feet, and get rid of much of its collection to fit in the space it’s actually paying for.

Granat said the museum will be able to keep its proudest possessions: two vessels that survived river combat during the Vietnam War, including a Hovercraft.
