YOKOHAMA, Japan (AP) — Jonathan Brownlee of Britain returned from injury to claim his first triathlon world series victory of the season by winning in Yokahama on Saturday.

The London Olympics bronze medalist, who had been told an ankle injury could end his season, edged Olympic silver medalist Javier Gomez of Spain to record his fifth career series win in a time of 1 hour, 44 minutes and 59 seconds. Joao Silva of Portugal was third.

In the women’s event, Gwen Jorgensen of the United States finished in 1: 57:05 to beat Emma Moffat of Australia and Jodie Stimpson of Britain.

The win allowed Jorgensen to widen her lead in the overall standings to 167 points over Germany’s Anne Haug.
