Access to Mount St. Helens to reopen Saturday

The Washington State Department of Transportation this Saturday will reopen all of state Highway 504, restoring access to Mount St. Helens for the visitor season.

The Spirit Lake Memorial Highway’s opening comes just in time for the U.S. Forest Service’s “It’s A Blast” season kick-off event at Johnston Ridge Observatory, also set for Saturday.

WSDOT closes the highway east of the Hummocks Trailhead each winter due to hazardous snow conditions and avalanche risk. Crews started work in mid-April to clear snow banks. The east end of the highway has been closed since December 2012.
