CINCINNATI (AP) — Running back Rex Burkhead is wearing a red band on his right wrist during the Cincinnati Bengals rookie minicamp this weekend, a reminder of the young cancer patient who changed his life in many ways.
Burkhead befriended 7-year-old Jack Hoffman when he played at Nebraska. The boy has a brain tumor that is responding nicely to treatment.
Even though Burkhead has moved on to the NFL, he’s still involved with a campaign to raise awareness and funds for pediatric cancer research. He’s wearing a red “Team Jack” wristband during workouts at Paul Brown Stadium.
Burkhead and the boy’s family recently visited President Obama in the White House.
The running back is trying to get the boy to change allegiances from the Packers to the Bengals.
