Washougal — Nearly 150 kids participated in a new running club for elementary students. Volunteer Tracey Stinchfield created the six-week program to foster fitness through fun. It’s offered through the Washougal School District’s Community Education and Recreation.

Nearly 100 Gause Elementary and 50 Hathaway Elementary students signed up to exercise once a week. The runners’ goal was to prepare for the annual Student Stride for Education Fun Run, a 5K event on May 18 that benefits the Washougal Schools Foundation.

“I hope they leave this experience with the impression that running is fun to do and that they will continue to have an active life,” Stinchfield said in a press release.
