CHICAGO (AP) — Landon Donovan has been left off the 29-man U.S. roster for a training camp ahead of a trio of World Cup qualifiers next month.

The move Thursday was not unexpected, with coach Jurgen Klinsmann saying last month that Donovan had work to do to reclaim his spot with the national team. The midfielder took a sabbatical of nearly four months after last season, only returning to the field with the Los Angeles Galaxy on March 30.

Donovan could still be added to the roster for the three qualifiers if there are injuries. The U.S. travels to Jamaica on June 7, plays Panama four days later in Seattle and then faces Honduras in Salt Lake City on June 18. The Americans also have exhibitions against Belgium on May 29 in Cleveland, and Germany on June 2 in Washington, D.C.

Klinsmann also bypassed former captain Carlos Bocanegra again after dropping him for a pair of qualifiers in March.
