Rumford beats Donaldson at World Match Play

KAVARNA, Bulgaria (AP) — Brett Rumford won his opening match at the World Match Play Championship, beating Jamie Donaldson 5 and 3 on Friday.

Rumford will next play Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano on the Thracian Cliffs course in the afternoon’s final round robin match. Both have already qualified for the last 16.

Richard Sterne also advanced, defeating former U.S. Open champion Geoff Ogilvy 5 and 4. Ogilvy now must beat Bo Van Pelt this afternoon to advance.

Defending champion Nicolas Colsaerts recovered from his first round loss, beating Kiradeck Aphibarnrat 3 and 2.
