SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (AP) — Andrew Gemmell and Haley Anderson have won the 5-kilometer races at the U.S. open water national championships to earn berths at this summer’s world meet in Barcelona, Spain.
The men’s race at Lower Castaic Lake north of Los Angeles on Sunday came down to the finish, with the top three touching with a second of each other. Gemmell won in 57 minutes, 22.07 seconds. Joey Pedraza was second at 57:22.68, and Sean Ryan took third at 57:22.75.
Anderson led after the first turn of the women’s race and stayed in the lead group of six swimmers. She distanced herself from the pack over the final 800 meters and won in 1:00:36.51. Becca Mann was second at 1:00:38.04. Emily Brunemann was third at 1:00:38.38.
Also qualifying for the world championships in July were Alex Meyer and Christine Jennings, who won the 10k races Friday. Ryan and Mann also earned berths for worlds in the 10k.
