PHOENIX (AP) — The San Diego Padres have recalled left-hander Tommy Layne from Triple-A Tucson and optioned right-hander Burch Smith.
The 28-year-old Layne was 1-3 with a 4.00 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 19 appearances at Tucson. He went 2-0 with a 3.24 ERA with 25 strikeouts in 26 games with the Padres last season after being acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The 23-year-old Smith made three starts for the Padres, going 0-1 with an 18.41 ERA and 11 strikeouts.
