Track and field: Nelson leaps to 1A triple jump state title

Ben Nelson picked the right time to uncork a massive triple jump.

Nelson, a senior at King’s Way Christian, won the 1A state triple jump title Friday at Cheney with a leap of 43 feet, 73/4 inches, which is the best mark in the state this season.

In winning by 61/2 inches, Nelson eclipsed his previous best mark this season of 42-5.

Also in the triple jump, La Center’s Jeremiah Arn placed fifth (41-61/2).

In other results at Cheney:

• La Center’s Kyle DeGraaff placed fourth in the 1,600-meter run.

• Katie Hebdon of La Center was sevneth in the high jump.

• Brandon Campbell of Stevenson was seventh in the pole vault.

• The Woodland boys advanced to today’s finals in both relay events.
