VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — U.S. Olympic champion Ryan Lochte won the 100-meter freestyle in 50.97 seconds Sunday night in the Mel Zajac Jr. International Canada Cup and lost a tight race to Canada’s Russell Wood in the 100 backstroke.

Lochte won four of his six races in the three-day meet.

“This meet has been really good for me, just getting back up on the blocks and racing,” Lochte said. “It doesn’t matter what kind of meet it is … racing the people next to you, it was a really good experience for me and I’m heading in the right direction. There’s a lot of things I still need to work on. I have one more month to make sure I tweak all those little things in my races.”
