Letter: Democrats are part of the problem

The Columbian
Published: May 28, 2013, 5:00pm

Our Democrats in Congress are either very weak or very stupid.

Senate Democrats supinely agreed to a situation whereby 60 votes (of 100) are needed even to vote on a bill. Even though Democrats are in the majority, they can’t get a bill past that supermajority blockade. They should have made the Republicans filibuster in the old-fashioned way. Let the people see who is wasting the people’s time and money and blocking needed appointments and legislation.

Republicans block almost every permanent appointment by President Obama, and when things go wrong because of ineffective departmental leadership or supervision, as in the current IRS case, Republicans attack the administration complaining of ineffectiveness or lack of leadership. The Democrats let them get away with those attacks as though the Republicans bear no responsibility.

Constant Republican attacks on the president are designed to weaken him for political reasons, to make him and his party more vulnerable in the next election. What they ignore is that, by weakening the president, they weaken the nation’s ability to influence events abroad. Republicans must realize that, in order for our nation to appear strong before our allies and before real or potential enemies, we must appear united. Democrats fail to stress this important point.
