PARIS (AP) — Marina Erakovic became the first woman from New Zealand to reach the third round of the French Open by defeating Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 on Thursday.
The 92nd-ranked Erakovic hit 38 winners to only 17 for the 16th-seeded Cibulkova. She will next face 17th-seeded Sloane Stephens of the United States.
Erakovic’s run at Roland Garros matches her best showing in a Grand Slam tournament: She reached the third round at Wimbledon in 2008.
Erakovic won her first singles title in February in Memphis.
