COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A University of Notre Dame spokesman says disparaging remarks by the president of Ohio State University aimed at the school and Roman Catholics are “regrettable.”

Notre Dame spokesman Dennis Brown tells The Associated Press that Ohio State President Gordon Gee (GHEE) had apologized to Notre Dame president John Jenkins, and that Jenkins had accepted it.

Brown says that Gee’s comments about Notre Dame’s late executive vice president were particularly regrettable. Brown says the Rev. Ned Joyce served the school and collegiate athletics long and well.

Gee told a university committee in December that Notre Dame wasn’t invited to join the Big Ten because they’re not good partners, and joked that Catholics can’t be trusted.

Gee included Joyce by name in his remarks.
