NEW YORK — Starbucks said it is banning smoking within 25 feet of its stores beginning today, where permitted by its leases.

Starbucks spokeswoman Jaime Lynn Riley said the intent is to expand the indoor no-smoking policy to outdoor seating areas.

The rule applies to the 7,000 cafes owned and operated by Starbucks, whether or not they have outdoor seating.

The policy shouldn’t be a big difference in areas that already ban smoking within a certain distance of a business entrance.
