LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — An IOC executive board member says Olympic winter sports federations oppose any plans to move the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to November.

Rene Fasel leads the Association of International Olympic Winter Sports Federations. He says scheduling the tournament in November would clash with the start of the season for all winter sports. He tells The Associated Press “we should really clearly show our position and protect our own interests.”

Fasel says the winter sports body will discuss the International Ski Federation’s proposal for a resolution against FIFA moving the World Cup to the traditional winter sports season.

FIFA is considering moving its tournament from the usual June-July period to avoid the scorching summer heat in Qatar. FIFA President Sepp Blatter has suggested November while UEFA President Michel Platini prefers a January start.
