CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Panthers have announced they’ve re-signed free agent guard/center Geoff Hangartner.

The 6-foot-5, 305-pound Hangartner returns for a third stint with Carolina after being released in training camp.

He’s started 83 games during his nine-year NFL career.

The move comes after Jeff Byers became the fourth Carolina offensive guard to be placed on injured reserve this season. Byers injured his foot on Carolina’s win over Atlanta Sunday. The Panthers previously placed starting guards Garry Williams and Amini Silatolu and rookie Edmund Kugbila on IR.

Hangartner played for Carolina from 2005-08 before signing with Buffalo as a free agent. He spent two years with the Bills before returning to Carolina in 2011.

Hangartner could start Sunday at San Francisco at right guard if Chris Scott (knee) is unable to play.
