SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Mariners have hired Detroit Tigers hitting coach Lloyd McClendon to be their next manager.

The Mariners announced their decision on Tuesday. McClendon becomes the third manager hired by general manager Jack Zduriencik. McClendon will be formally introduced by the team later this week.

McClendon replaces Eric Wedge who walked away at the end of the season, citing differences with the front office on how to move forward with the Mariners’ rebuilding process. Wedge’s contract expired after the season.

Seattle is the fourth club to fill its managerial vacancy. The Washington Nationals hired Matt Williams, the Cincinnati Reds chose Bryan Price and Detroit passed over McClendon for Brad Ausmus.
