Vancouver — Clark County commissioners on Tuesday approved a $200,000 contract to plan the future of the old Leichner Landfill site and surrounding properties.
The agreement with consultant Maul Foster Alongi, which has offices in Vancouver, comes nearly a year after the county purchased the former landfill site for possible redevelopment. County officials have said some of the 120-acre purchase area could be developed for light industrial use. Over the landfill itself, where garbage is actually buried, some kind of recreational use is more likely.
The Leichner Landfill closed in 1991 after 56 years in operation. The Orchards area site continues to be monitored.
The contract will be paid through a special fund established before the landfill shut down, said county Director of Environmental Services Don Benton. The county has also applied for an additional $200,000 grant through the state Department of Ecology.
