BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) — Babatunde Olumuyiwa’s inside basket with 1:52 to play broke a 62-all tie and USC Upstate made it stand up Saturday, beating Virginia Tech 64-63 in the season opener for both teams.

The Spartans won for the first time in eight games against a school from the Atlantic Coast Conference as Ty Green scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half and Torrey Craig added 13 points.

The Hokies got 17 second-half points from Cadarian Raines and 18 points from Jarell Eddie, but only three of those came after halftime and Olumuyiwa blocked his wild attempt at a winning shot in the closing seconds.

The game was tied eight times in the second half before Olumuyiwa’s basket made it 64-62.

The Spartans then fouled Eddie, normally a reliable free throw shooter, but his first attempt with 1:29 left came up short before he made the second.
