PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Temple University basketball fans are gearing up for what they hope will be a winning season. And they want the international students on campus to join them.
To help the newcomers catch Owl fever, the athletic department recently held a workshop on basketball basics and fan culture.
About 2,300 foreigners from 110 countries attend the Philadelphia university. But Temple officials say some are too shy to attend unfamiliar sporting events.
At the clinic, international students learned how to cheer for the home team — and how to jeer opposing players. They also practiced basketball skills like passing, dribbling, shooting and defense.
In addition, the university is hosting a hospitality suite for foreign students at the Owls’ home opener on Monday against Kent State.
