Conor Dwyer wins 400-yard IM in Arena opener

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Olympic gold medalist Conor Dwyer won the 400-yard individual medley and finished second in the 200 freestyle Thursday night at the University of Minnesota in the six-stop Arena Grand Prix Series’ short-course opener.

Dwyer, from Winnetka, Ill., won the 400 IM in 3 minutes, 40.03 seconds. Michael McBroom of The Woodlands, Texas, was second in 3:47.66. In the 200 free, Dwyer was edged by North Baltimore Aquatic Club training partner Yannick Agnel, the Frenchman who finished in 1:31.90. Dwyer followed in 1:32.09.

BJ Johnson of Seattle won the 100 breaststroke in 52.58, and Brazil’s Cesar Cielo took the 100 butterfly in 46.19. In women’s events, Caitlin Leverenz of Tucson, Ariz., won the 400 IM in 4:07.06, Megan Romano of St. Petersburg, Fla., took the 200 free in 1:45.29, Claire Donahue of Lenoir City, Tenn., won the 100 butterfly in 51.80, and Haley Spencer of O’Fallon, Mo., topped the field in the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.26.
