AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State defensive lineman David Irving has been arrested and charged with domestic assault of his girlfriend.

An Ames police complaint says the woman reported that Irving held her down, cut off a large portion of her hair and punched her repeatedly in the leg on Wednesday.

Police say Irving acknowledged arguing with the woman, who lives with him and is the mother of their child, but he denied cutting her hair.

Irving is being held in Story County jail on a charge of domestic assault with injury. He is scheduled to make an initial court appearance Thursday.

Iowa State spokesman Michael Green says the Cyclones are still gathering information on the situation and declined further comment.

Jail records don’t yet indicate whether Irving has an attorney.
