NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Malcolm Hawkins scored 25 points and Norfolk State took down Virginia Union 92-84 Friday night.
Virginia Union (0-3) opened a 13-7 lead and maintained an advantage early in the first half. Norfolk State (2-1) fought back to take a 30-29 lead on a Jordan Weathers layup with 6:42 left and took a 48-40 lead into halftime.
Norfolk State led by as many as 16 points in the second half, but the Panthers erased the deficit and took an 80-78 lead on a dunk by Omar Briggs with just under five minutes left. Hawkins responded with a jumper followed by a 3-pointer on consecutive possessions to give Norfolk State an 83-80 advantage, as the Spartans outscored Virginia Union 12-4 in the final 4 minutes of the game.
RaShid Gaston had 17 points and 14 rebounds for Norfolk State.
Briggs had 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Virginia Union.
