Marist defeats Mercer 33-7 to share Pioneer title

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (AP) — Chuckie Looney accounted for three touchdowns to lead Marist to a share of the league title with a 33-7 win Saturday over Mercer.

Looney completed a 53-yard touchdown pass to Matt Tralli on just the third play from scrimmage to give Marist (8-3, 7-1 Pioneer Football League) the early lead. Atiq Lucas rushed for back-to-back touchdowns to give the Red Foxes a 21-7 halftime lead.

Looney had rushing TDs of 14 and 9 yards in the second half. He now has 32 career touchdowns, surpassing his own school record of 29.

Eight wins is a school record for Marist, and they now share the PFL title with Butler.

John Russ hit Robert Brown for an 18-yard touchdown pass for Mercer (9-2, 5-2), which tied the game at 7 in the first quarter. Russ threw four interceptions.
