Winthrop defeats Virginia Intermont 96-62

ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) — Keon Johnson scored a game-high 20 points to lead Winthrop to a 96-62 victory over Virginia Intermont on Saturday night.

Johnson was 7 of 11 from the field and 5 of 8 from the 3-point line. Andre Smith had 16 points including four 3-pointers. James Bourne came in from the bench to score 15 and grab three rebounds. The Eagles were 57.4 percent overall from the field and from the 3-point line.

The teams were close until midway through the first period when Johnson hit four 3-pointers within 10 minutes to finish the half with Winthrop leading 45-31. Four more from the 3-point line by the Eagles (4-1) in the second period along with 10 turnovers by Virginia Intermont left the Cobras trailing far behind.
