Battle Ground –A 62-year-old man with asthma recently proved to himself that he could complete a cross-country bicycle trip despite not riding one for 45 years. Jim Ryan, who lives a few miles north of Battle Ground, started his journey on Aug. 1 at Vancouver, B.C., and ended on Nov. 8 in Key West, Fla. He retired 3 years ago and felt like doing something adventurous. He said he met many other older bicycle tourists on his trip and now counts some of them as good friends. His “Seeing America at 10 MPH” blog can be found at http://www.crazyguyonabike.com.

“I wanted to do something pretty extreme, to prove that just because you are older now, and maybe not in the best of health, you do not have to become sedentary,” he wrote in an email.
