Southeast Louisiana defeats Western Illinois 62-52

HAMMOND, La. (AP) — Antonnio Benton scored a team-high 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead Southeast Louisiana in a 62-52 defeat of Western Illinois on Tuesday night.

JaMichael Hawkins had 15 points including three 3-pointers and Devonte Upson chipped in with seven points and nine rebounds for the Lions (3-2).

Southeast Louisiana jumped to a 10-point lead midway through the first period and a 25-23 lead at the break. Western Illinois tied the score and briefly took over the lead early in the second but could not maintain it following a Benton steal and subsequent dunk. A pair of 3-pointers by Hawkins and Joshua Filmore widened the Lions’ lead.

Garret Covington led the Leathernecks (1-4) with a game-high 22 points, 8 rebounds and one assist. Western Illinois hit 40 percent each from the field and the line and sank just 26.7 percent of its 3-pointers.
