Conservative Republicans are now trying to block implementation of the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare. There have been numerous analyses performed that suggest that this legislation could have major negative consequences for the health care system in the United States and the economy as a whole. And it was passed in open defiance of the majority of the public, which opposes the law. Nevertheless, it is now the law of the land.
While Obamacare is liable to do a lot of harm, Republican efforts to block it could turn the situation into an even bigger mess. How about we let it go forward and then if its consequences are what its critics claim they will be, then we vote out those politicians responsible and put in a new Congress committed to true health care reform?
Some conservatives claim that while Obamacare is the “law of the land,” so are our immigration policies, and Democrats have no compunction about flouting the immigration laws when they feel it serves their political agenda. But two wrongs don’t make a right. To claim that because one political party behaves in a lawless manner that the rule of law should be thrown out the window altogether is simply a recipe for the total breakdown of civilized society.
