PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — John Spooney ran for two touchdowns and Brown handled Rhode Island 31-14 in the 98th battle for the Governor’s Cup on Saturday night.

Brown (2-1) earned its third-straight win against the Rams (2-4), who played their 1,000th game in program history.

Spooney took the first play from scrimmage 73 yards for a touchdown, but Bob Bentsen found Robbie Jackson with a 17-yard pass to tie the game at 7-7 late in the first quarter.

After adding a second-quarter field goal, the Bears capped an 83-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run from Spooney to take a 17-7 halftime lead.

Brown added two more second-half touchdowns and Emory Polley intercepted Bentsen twice in the third quarter to help the Bears pull away.

Bentsen accounted for both of Rhode Island’s scores, adding a rushing touchdown with 20 seconds left in the game.
