GRANTS PASS, Ore. — An Oregon Youth Authority spokesman says rioting broke out at a youth prison in Southern Oregon when guards started a search for contraband.

Oregon Youth Authority spokesman C.J. Drake told the Statesman-Journal that 11 of the 20 inmates of a quad took part in the Sunday night unruliness at the Rogue Valley Youth Correctional Facility in Grants Pass, and the nine others were evacuated. He said he did not know specifically what guards were looking for.

Superintendent Ken Jerin told the Grants Pass Daily Courier one guard had to barricade himself in an office until police and guards regained control, but there were no serious injuries.

Jerin says two SWAT teams and negotiators were called in, and the last youth gave up shortly after midnight.
