CINCINNATI (AP) — Xavier women’s basketball coach Amy Waugh resigned as she was getting ready to start her third season.

The Musketeers went 21-36 during Waugh’s two seasons. She was a point guard for Xavier until her graduation in 2003 and returned in 2009 as an assistant to Kevin McGuff. She got the job when McGuff left for Washington. McGuff was hired as Ohio State’s head coach in April.

Brian Neal, in his third year as an assistant, was made interim head coach on Wednesday.

Waugh said in a statement that she had been considering the move during the summer. She leaves as the team is getting ready to start practice for the season.

Neal was head coach for seven seasons at Thomas More in Cincinnati before joining Waugh’s staff.
