Government shutdown delays Sept. jobless report

Olympia — The state Employment Security Department will not release a September employment report this week because of the federal government shutdown.

The report, which would have announced the seasonally adjusted statewide unemployment figure for September, was set to be released Oct. 16.

The state’s seasonally adjusted jobless rate was 7 percent in August.

Due to the shutdown, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics hasn’t been able to transfer data to the state, and nearly all of Employment Security’s labor-market information staff has been furloughed.

Federal funds that support the office have been temporarily cut.
