EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings have ruled starting safety Harrison Smith out for the game against the New York Giants on Monday night because of turf toe on his left foot.

Smith was injured Sunday against Carolina, and the Vikings fear the injury could require surgery. Coach Leslie Frazier says the team is consulting with several doctors to determine the best course of action.

If Smith needs surgery, he could miss two months. Frazier says the team has talked about placing him on injured reserve with the possibility of coming back in eight weeks.

The loss is a big one for the beleaguered Vikings pass defense. They are 29th in the league against the pass. Smith has 34 tackles and two interceptions this season. Andrew Sendejo will start in Smith’s place.
