GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) — Gary Wilkins had a 98-yard interception return for a touchdown, highlighting five turnovers forced by the Furman defense, en route to a 27-10 win over Appalachian State Saturday.

Furman (3-4, 2-2 Southern Conference) also recovered four fumbles against the rival Mountaineers (1-6, 1-3) in the last conference contest between the two schools. Appalachian State will depart for the Sun Belt Conference in 2014.

The Paladins held a 6-3 lead before Wilkins’ interception halted a promising Appalachian State drive and gave Furman its first touchdown of the game.

A rushing touchdown by Ernie Cain and a 25-yard touchdown pass from Reese Hannon to Ryan Culbreath gave the Paladins a 27-3 lead in the third quarter.

Appalachian State had 473 total yards compared with 336 for Furman, but was hurt by turnovers. The Mountaineers fumbled eight times in the game.

Kameron Bryant logged 307 yards passing and a touchdown for Appalachian State.
