Demolition is under way at PeaceHealth’s central Eugene campus to make way for an upgraded behavioral health services unit, set to open in January 2015.

The $13.6 million construction project includes a 25,684-square-foot facility to replace the aging Johnson Unit at Sacred Heart Medical Center, University District, which is near the University of Oregon campus.

The new unit will be a third larger than the Johnson Unit, with double the number of secure beds, and designed for improved patient privacy and security and staff safety, hospital officials said.

PeaceHealth, a three-state health care system based in Vancouver, is the dominant health care provider and a major employer in Lane County.

Demolition will be going on between now and the end of November, Farrington said.
