LONDON (AP) — United States defender Oguchi Onyewu has signed for second-tier English club Queens Park Rangers on a free transfer following his release by Sporting Lisbon.

Onyewu, who played for the U.S. at the last two World Cups and has made 68 international appearances, returns to England after spending time on loan at Newcastle in 2007.

QPR was relegated from the Premier League last season but is second in the League Championship as it seeks an immediate return to the top flight.

Onyewu says “I want to help the club get back to the Premier League, that’s why I’ve come here.”

He spent last season on loan at Malaga in Spain. He has also played for European sides AC Milan, FC Twente and Standard Liege.
