WASHINGTON (AP) — Anthony Philyaw rushed for 98 yards and three touchdowns as Howard defeated Morgan State 28-14 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference matchup Saturday.

Philyaw opened the scoring with a one-yard run on fourth down in the first quarter and had two more touchdowns in the second half to help the Bison (3-5, 2-3 MEAC) gain cushion.

The Bears (2-6, 2-2) trimmed Howard’s early lead to 1 when Broderick Gager returned a punt 89 yards for a score in the second quarter.

Howard took a 22-7 lead following a 52-yard score on a fake punt by Jalen Fleck and a seven-yard touchdown by Philyaw.

Morgan State pulled within 8 when Moses Skillon ran for a score in the third quarter.

An interception and a fumble halted two of the Bears’ last four drives. Philyaw’s third touchdown of the game, a four-yard run, put the game out of reach with 1:07 remaining.
