Tacoma hospital puts newborns in sleep sacks

TACOMA — Instead of wrapping babies in blankets, Tacoma General Hospital is sending newborns home in sleep sacks.

The News Tribune reports it’s a new way to combat sudden infant death syndrome. Sleep sacks keep the baby warm but are snug enough that there’s no risk of a loose blanket suffocating an infant.

The sacks have a zipper on the bottom for diaper changes.

The Center for Childhood Safety at Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital donated 3,200 sleep sacks to Tacoma General. They should last about a year because about 3,000 babies are born each year at Tacoma General.
