A Battle Ground company was among 23 businesses, individuals and agencies hit with environmental fines of at least $1,000 in the second quarter of 2013, according to the state Department of Ecology.

The Gold Medal Group LLC and president Dennis Pavlina were penalized $9,000 for failing to follow an order to offset damage caused by illegally filling in about 37 acres of wetlands while preparing to build a mixed-use development in Battle Ground, according to the department. The fine was issued June 17.

The 23 entities fined $1,000 or more between April 1 and June 30 received penalties totaling $141,800, according to the department. Gold Medal Group was the only Clark County entity on that list.

The largest fine went to King County, which was penalized $22,000 in May for releasing more than 10 million gallons of sewage from a large pipeline in neighboring Snohomish County.
