ARAMON FORMIGAL, Spain (AP) — Warren Barguil of France won the mountainous 16th stage of the Spanish Vuelta on Monday, perfectly timing his final sprint up the steep Aramon Formigal peak. Vincenzo Nibali of Italy fended off rivals to keep the overall lead.

Barguil, a 21-year-old rider for Argos-Shimano, finished in 3 hours, 43 minutes, 31 seconds. He was just ahead of Rigoberto Uran of Colombia, who had the same time.

Poland’s Bartosz Huzarski was third, three seconds behind, on the 91-mile ride from Graus to Aramon Formigal.

Nibali lost time on the final ascent to Christopher Horner but remained in the overall lead, 28 seconds ahead of the American.
